Having an history of more than 2000 years old, Ganoderma lucidum or Reishi mushroom is known as the plant of immortality in China and the Far East countries. In Japan and China, which has a special place in many of these mushrooms the red reishi has many names. Japanese call it Reishi or Mannentake (10 000 year mushroom), the Chinese and Koreans call it Ling Chi Ling Zhi (Mushroom of Immortality or Immortality Plant).

Ganoderma lucidum is in the Aphyllophorales team and belogs to the Polyporaceae (Ganodermataceae)family within the Bacidiomycetes class. Latin name “lucidus” means bright or eye-catching. In recent years not only in the Far East, it is used in other parts of the world because of the recognition of medical benefits.

Fungus Ganoderma lucidum lives in more temperate regions. It has a very bright and a moist surface. Red Reishi’s Hat has a color from dull red to red-brown, sometimes it can be almost black. The bottom of the mushroom hat is white. Stem from white to yellow part, then changing to brown in color, with approximately 10 cm long structure. Red Reishi is a single year fungus.

Red Reishi is very valuable in terms of medicinal mushroom in recent years, studies on cholesterol-lowering properties are made. In addition to anti cholesterol effects, anti-tumor, preventing inflammation reactions, such as deterrence to platelet aggregation because of many helpful features, various studies on are made. The wide range of biological effects of red Reishi mushroom structure in alkaloids, amino acids, peptides, inorganic elements, steroids, fatty acids and organic acids can be linked to diversity.
